Beaconsfield United Church is like a village.
WHERE ELSE? Where else do you get to be part of, well, a natural, dare we say organic community? One with babies, kids, teens, singles, couples, even puppy-dogs... right up to empty-nesters, and great-grandparents? A community with people who are comfortable and generous, or proud but less able, less comfortable? Needing help and finding it here? A community that, like the village, has all sorts of characters? Helpful, hurting, off the wall, dependable, shy, gregarious... and every shade between? In other words, inclusive and real?
There’s history too. Like, 6000 years or so? From those first wanderings tribes [and they were just as smart and questioning as we are…] come our wonderings about the meaning of life. And we’re still pondering, and asking, and discussing. As we contribute to our community’s life we find depth and meaning and purpose, going forward in our individual journeys - aided by this village of diverse folk.
So we have our traditions, our celebrations of birth, of love, of death. The wisdom of the ages, the cutting edge realities of the 21st century form the basis of our thinking. Above all we are free. Free to speculate and to question, to evolve concepts of the sacred part of our lives which work for us, both as individuals and as community.
We are not afraid of controversy. We open our community to minorities, and we stand with them in their search for peace and meaning and security, here on the West Island, and in the wider world.
Some of us are believers, some openly follow the path of Christ as we live our lives. Primarily we are searching for meaning and how to change ourselves and the world. Our village is rich in its diversity, intellectually and spiritually, yet firm in the path it must take. Justice. Compassion. Understanding. Love.
Be challenged. Come to visit. Come to stay. Come to live!
Welcome to our village.
